Lignans are a kind of plant polyphenol called phytoestrogen. The best sources of lignans are Flax Seed Hulls and Sesame Seed, with Flax Seed Hulls containing about 10 times as much lignans as Sesame Seed.

These phytonutrients are converted to human lignans by bacterial action in the gut, called enterolactone and enterodiol. The main lignan in Flax Seed Hulls is Secoisolariciresinol Diglucoside or SDG. Research on SDG has been extensive and very exciting.
Lignans are capable of binding to estrogen receptors in the body, thereby preventing excess or ‘bad’ estrogen from promoting cancerous growths. They also have a weak estrogen effect that can serve as a natural and safe form of Hormone Replacement Therapy for post-menopausal women.

This ability to both reduce or increase estrogen as needed has multiple benefits for both sexes. Hormonal balance is increasingly at risk from stress and chemicals in our environment, particularly from plastics such as cling-wrap, food containers and water bottles. This can lead to serious health risks.

Lignans also modulate and strengthen the immune system, thereby helping in all health problems including auto-immune conditions.

To get enough lignans for therapeutic effect you would need to eat several tablespoons of ground fresh flaxseed per day. This may not be practical or advisable. Moreover, so-called High Lignan Flax Oil contains virtually no lignans at all.

It is better to take a concentrated extract where a little goes a long way.

All medical conditions must be diagnosed and treated by a qualified health practitioner. No medical claims are made.
